The Week Ahead: August 6

Federal

Trump has been rage tweeting a lot this past week. Today he acknowledged the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting was about getting dirt on Clinton – basically an admission of cooperating with a foreign government to affect our election. As the Mueller investigation closes in, we need to remain vigilant as his behavior becomes increasingly bizarre and erratic.

However, we also need to keep our eye on the ball and not be distracted by his antics. Two issues to monitor: The federal government funding deadline is September 30th and Trump has threatened a government shut down if he doesn’t get border wall funding. Also, Senate Republicans appear to be shielding documents from Supreme Court nominee Brett Cavanaugh’s time as a senior staffer in the Bush administration. Senate Democrats are seeking these documents as part of the vetting process for Cavanaugh.

The Trump administration has still not reunited families separated at the southwest border as ordered by a federal judge. Last week they attempted to shift the responsibility to the ACLU but thankfully the judge wasn’t having any of that. Keep the pressure on to reunite all the families.

State and Local

Voters Not Politicians has succeeded in getting the citizen’s redistricting commission on the November ballot! The Michigan Supreme Court allowed it with a vote of 4-3. Now we have to get it passed. You played a big role in this as Indivisible Greater Grand Rapids has been involved in the effort for over a year. Let’s keep working and help bring this thing over the finish line. Volunteer, donate, tell your friends, please do whatever you can whenever you can. Here is a link to a one-minute VNP video to share with your friends. Tell them to vote YES! on Proposal 2!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SFm-w9-Ky0

The primary election is this Tuesday, August 7th. Please vote and encourage others to do so as well. Remember, you don’t have to be registered in a party to vote in the primary election but you MUST NOT vote for candidates in more than one party. This is also called “split ticket” voting and it will invalidate your ballot in the primary. In the general election in November, you can split ticket vote.
