The Week Ahead – March 19-25, 2018

Federal

This is the last working week for Congress before the Easter Recess (March 24-April 7). Look for possible Town Hall announcements by Amash (& Huizenga??) during the recess.

No major legislative votes are expected, except funding for the government expires on March 23. This time, instead of a “continuing resolution” (which authorizes agencies to spend the same amount of money as before), Congress is expected to pass an “omnibus” spending bill, which will set new spending levels for agencies through the end of the fiscal year. The omnibus is Congress’ last chance to demand protections for Dreamers because Republicans are unlikely to do anything unless they absolutely have to. It’s critical that we continue pressuring our members of Congress to provide some permanent fix for Dreamers.

With the firing last week of Rex Tillerson and FBI Asst. Director McCabe, rumors of Trump’s intent to fire National Security Advisor McMaster and Attorney General Sessions, and Trump’s stepped-up criticisms of the Mueller investigation, Mueller’s position is increasingly precarious. Please remain vigilant and remember the need for spontaneous protest in case he tries to fire Mueller. (If Mueller is fired BEFORE 2 p.m local time, a protest at Calder Plaza will begin at 5 p.m. If Mueller is fired AFTER 2 p.m. local time, the protest will begin at noon the following day.)

State and Local

This past week saw spontaneous nation-wide school-walkouts on March 14, inspired by the students of Parkland, Florida, to protest gun violence and demand tighter gun control laws. Similar nation-wide “March for Life” events are planned for Saturday, March 24, and there will be one in Grand Rapids we should all try to attend.
